BRINE PURIFICATION PLANTS

All desalination processes separate the input or raw water (whether seawater or brackish water) into two different streams: one of drinking water, i.e. the desalinated water produced in the desalination plant, and another stream of what is known as brine, which is the same input water with a higher concentration of salts, as these are diluted in a smaller quantity of water.

KERN S&D has extensive experience in the design and construction of brine purification plants using the vacuum evaporation process, which is a zero discharge process that connects directly with the circular economy model that seeks to close the product cycle.

TECHNOLOGY

Zero discharge processes are carried out through a double procedure in which the flow is separated into two: on the one hand, high quality water, and on the other, the salts that were part of the effluent. In this way, the waste is non-existent, as the water can be reused, just as the salts can be revalued.

Thanks to this zero discharge system, management costs can be reduced, while at the same time the volume of stored pollutants can be reducedless volume of hazardous liquid pollutants on the industrial site itself – and the number of transports of these wastes can be reduced, minimising the risk of accidents and the consumption of diesel fuel.

Among the 2 zero landfill processes, the most important is the :

  • Vacuum evaporation process: in which evaporators or concentrators are used to concentrate the waste, even achieving completely dry waste, which means that vacuum evaporation minimises the volume of waste. The water is boiled, allowing it to evaporate, and then condensed, which produces a high quality of water that can be reused in different applications. At the same time, crystallisation allows the salts to be obtained in solid and dry form.
