GAS TREATMENT PLANTS (RTO)

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases by certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which can have short- and long-term adverse health effects.

KERN S&D has the know-how and own technology to support its customers in the development of integrated gas treatment solutions from the initial stages to implementation and commissioning.

TECHNOLOGY

Regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO) is the best solution currently available for the effective removal of VCOs and odours, due to three main factors:

  • High thermal efficiency
  • High percentage removal of volatile organic compounds
  • High flexibility: the type and amount of impurities can be changed without changing the plant efficiency


This technology consists of subjecting the contaminated gas to high temperatures for the necessary time and in the presence of oxygen in order to carry out the following oxidation reaction.

The operation of a Regenerative Thermal Oxidation installation is that the contaminated process air is sucked in by the main fan usually located upstream of the oxidizer.

Subsequently, the fan blows the process air through the first ceramic tower. In the first tower, the process air is heated by the ceramic. When the air has passed through the ceramic bed, it reaches the combustion chamber where oxidation takes place. For gases without halogenated compounds, the temperature is usually around 800 ºC – 900 ºC; in gases where halogenated compounds are present, the temperature should be 1,100 ºC to ensure complete oxidation. It will depend, in any case, on the compounds to be treated.

At the same time, when the process air enters the first chamber, the oxidised air passes through the second ceramic tower to exchange the heat from the air to the tower. This cools the gas and heats the ceramic bed. After passing through the second tower, the air is sent to the stack with the pollutants already removed.
The third ceramic tower is used to recirculate the purge, as in the valve sequence it must be ensured that all air is oxidis.

This sequence is repeated every few seconds, between 45 and 90 seconds.
