CAUSTIC POTASH PRODUCTION PLANTS

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), ‘chlorine disinfection is the best guarantee of microbiologically safe water’.

Chlorine as such or in the form of other chlorinated compounds remains the only product capable of ensuring that water remains disinfected all the way from the water treatment plant to the end user’s tap.

Because of its properties, chlorine is highly effective in combating all types of microbes that water can contain – including bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts, and the algae and slime that proliferate inside water supply pipes and tanks.

KERN S&D plants respond to a worldwide need, which is the on-site industrial production of small volumes of Chlorine and Caustic Potash.

TECHNOLOGY

KERN S&D has an innovative caustic potash production technology consisting of a bipolar membrane electrolyser (does not contain mercury). The plants designed and developed by KERN S&D use a safe, environmentally friendly and highly competitive technology due to its low investment and low operating costs (high electrical efficiency and degree of automation). KERN S&D’s technology complies with the Community Directives on Best Available Technologies (BAT) for chlor-alkali production (Directive 2010/75/UE).

APPLICATIONS

Caustic Potash is widely used in:
  • Potassium Carbonate – which is applied in a wide variety of industrial uses (manufacture of special glasses, foodstuffs, dyes, titanium enamels, fire extinguishing powders…)
  • Potassium phosphates – constituent elements in detergents and industrial cleaners, and in water treatment chemicals
  • Agricultural fertilisers – source of potassium supply for crops sensitive to chloride ions
  • Soaps made from coconut oil fatty acid, vegetable oil, tall-oil and toluene sulphonic acid
  • Others
    • Electroplating
    • Herbicides
    • Catalysts
    • Oxidants
    • Medicines
    • Alkaline-electrolytic batteries
